68-72 Nova 4-spd Shifter (Non-console)

The information and pictures below are taken from a 70 floor shift Nova with a bench front seat. The 4-spd floor shifter was offered with the standard front bench seat or with Bucket Seats, however the position is the same for bench or Bucket seat cars without the console. Many thanks go out to Ron Bentz, for providing the measurements and pictures, Thanks Ron.

As shown above the size of the factory cutout is approximately 4-1/4" wide by 5-1/2" long. The cut also seems to be a bit tapered on the end towards the rear of the car. See images below:

The area around the cutout has 6 holes positioned around to support the shifter boot. These shifter boots can be purchased from www.greenwoodchevy.com, the boot pictured below is offered from them.

Next, the area is position 8" back from the front sheetmetal seem on the trans tunnel (see Image # 1, below). The last measurement needed is to position how far side to side. As you can see from the pictures this favors the driver side. Taking a measurement from the driver side door sill, the far edge (passenger side edge is 26-1/8". See image # 2 and image # 3 below:

Reverse Lockout Mechanism
GM also equipped the 4 spd Nova's with a steering wheel lockout feature. This would rotate the steering column and lock the keys unless the transmission was shifted into reverse. Click on the image below:
